Fan-stories! Encounters of an Outward Trader Part1
« on: November 12, 2015, 02:18:24 am »
The Traders' horse-drawn cart creaked as it was slowly pulled across the stone bridge. The midday sun glared down upon the trader, but he knew he would find some respite from the heat under the thick canopy of the forest ahead. The road from Monsoon to Berg was a route he had taken many times before, and by now he knew what to expect. The cart jostled as its' wheels left the well kept stone bridge and met the dirt road. Heading in to the forest, the path ahead would become speckled with foliage and leaves from the tree tops. The general lack of upkeep of the path betrays the notion that this forested road serves as the main connection between Monsoon and Berg. The Trader rubbed a wrinkled hand against his cheek, scratching at a small insect bite gained from the night before.
"The price of a cool breeze." he muttered as he brought his hand back to the slack reigns.

Approaching the forest proper, the Trader drove the pack-horse to a stop. Ahead at the side of the road was a man waving down the cart. Such sights were fairly common, as many travelers would trade coin or a story in exchange for a ride. The man walked up to the cart and bowed slightly to the Trader. The Trader could see he was a young man, barely in his mid-twenties. He had what appeared to be a longsword sheathed at his waist, and wore a pack of travelling gear on his back. The mans' warm looking brown cloak obscured most of what lay underneath, but given his equipment the Trader could assume he was armoured.
"Where are you heading, friend?" the Trader inquired.
"Harmattan," the man replied, "but I'll settle with as far as you can take me."
The Trader stretched a bit. The road to Berg was long and he would be glad of the company. As well as that, young as the man seemed the Trader had a good feeling about him, like he could hold his own in a fight. Bandits and brigands usually left the smaller carts alone and would instead target larger caravans, as by attacking those travelling on the road they would surely invoke the ire of the authorities. Even so, one could never be too careful.
"There's not much room on the cart," the Trader paused, "I can take you as far as Berg if you don't mind sitting up front."
The young man beamed with joy as he began fishing around in his cloak, likely for his coinpurse.
"No need for that," said the Trader as he held out a hand to the man, "You seem like you've travelled, how about a story to pass the time instead?".
"Very well," replied the man as he clambered aboard the cart.

The Trader took the reigns and the cart slowly jostled down the road once more, deeper in to the forest.
